WOOD PELLET LINE

A wood pellet line is a complete set of equipment used to process biomass feedstocks such as wood, wood chips, sawdust, straw, or other agricultural waste into uniform, high-density wood pellets. These pellets have become a renewable, sustainable, and green energy source due to their high calorific value, clean combustion, and ease of storage and transportation.

A standard wood pellet line generally includes several key steps:

  • Chipping: Wood logs or large wood blocks are chopped into small chips by a wood chipper for subsequent crushing.
  • Crushing: Wood chips or agricultural straw are processed by a crusher into fine sawdust or powder, providing a uniform feedstock for pelleting.
  • Drying: Moisture-rich feedstock is dried in a dryer, typically reducing the moisture content to 12–18% to meet optimal pelletizing conditions.
  • Pelletizing: The processed feedstock is pressed into dense, cylindrical pellets under high temperature and pressure in a pelletizer.
  • Cooling and Screening: Freshly produced pellets are hot and soft, requiring cooling in a cooler and screening to remove fines and debris.
  • Packaging: Qualified pellets are packaged using an automatic weighing and packaging machine for easy storage and transportation.

Every step ensures that pellets meet international standards for size, density, and durability. The production line configuration varies depending on production capacity and raw material conditions.

The wood pellet line price ranges from 20,000 USD to 690,000 USD, depending mainly on production capacity and raw material characteristics. For example, a small-scale line with a capacity of 0.2–0.3 tons per hour starts at approximately US$20,000, while a large-scale industrial line with a capacity of 20 tons per hour can cost over US$2,000,000. Furthermore, factors such as raw material moisture content, pellet size, and the degree of automation also influence the final design and price.

To ensure the quality and stability of pellet fuel, a complete production process is crucial. From raw material pretreatment to final packaging, every step directly determines the pellet’s final product quality and market competitiveness. The following details the standard process of a wood pellet line, providing a deeper understanding of how each step ensures a highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and internationally compliant product.

The production process of the wood pellet line is: pre-treatment → crushing → drying → granulation → cooling and screening → packaging

1. Pre-treatment

This production line is suitable for a variety of feedstocks, including logs, branches, and wood processing residues (wood shavings, sawdust, and scraps). Large, hard logs or wood blocks are first coarsely crushed using a drum chipper, cutting them into chips approximately 2-3 cm in diameter.

2. Crushing Section

The chipped wood chips and unchipped wood raw materials, such as branches, sawdust, and scraps, will be sent to the hammer mill for further processing to crush the wood chips into 3-5mm fine wood chips to meet the requirements of pelletizing.

3. Drying Section

Crushed raw materials typically contain a high moisture content. To achieve the ideal pelletizing condition, they are dried in a drum dryer or belt dryer, where hot air dries the raw materials, evaporating the moisture. This reduces the moisture content to approximately 12–18%, the optimal range for pelletizing.

4. Pelletizing Section

After drying, the wood chips enter the wood granulator. The material is sent into the ring molding machine through the feed opening and pressed into the mold hole by the pressure of the roller, eventually forming 2-12mm high-density cylindrical pellets. Customers can choose different sizes of molds according to different needs.

5. Cooling & Screening Section

Newly produced pellets are hot and humid, making them prone to deformation and mold. Therefore, they require cooling. This process utilizes a counterflow cooler, allowing cold air to contact the hot pellets in opposite directions, achieving rapid cooling. A vibrating screener is also installed to separate qualified pellets from debris and powder. Unqualified pellets can be returned to the pelletizing process for reuse, improving raw material utilization and reducing waste.

6. Packing Section

After cooling, the pellets are weighed, bagged, and sewn using an automated packaging system. Packaging specifications can be customized to meet customer needs. The final product can be used in a variety of applications, including heating, industrial fuel, and boiler combustion.

How to choose the right wood pellet line?

Choosing the right wood pellet production line requires considering several key factors to ensure subsequent production efficiency, product quality, and investment returns.

  • First, the desired output should be clearly defined. Small production lines are suitable for pilot projects, while large production lines are more suitable for commercial or industrial production. Production capacity directly impacts the price of the wood pellet line.
  • Second, the raw material should be considered. Different raw materials, such as sawdust, wood chips, branches, or crop straw, require different pretreatment equipment, which impacts the production line design and cost.
  • The level of automation in the production line should also be considered. Fully automated production lines equipped with PLC controls, conveying systems, and integrated packaging systems are more expensive but can improve efficiency and reduce labor costs. Semi-automated production lines are more affordable but require more manual operation.
  • Finally, customization and local conditions, such as plant space, energy supply, and installation requirements, should be considered. Customized solutions may increase initial investment but can optimize performance for specific needs.
  • By comprehensively evaluating these factors, you can select a wood pellet making line that meets your production goals while optimizing investment and efficiency.

How to reduce the cost of a wood pellet line?

Reducing wood pellet manufacturing plant prices starts with selecting the appropriate production capacity to ensure it matches actual demand. You can also choose to configure only the necessary auxiliary equipment. For example, if the raw material moisture content meets pelletizing requirements, drying equipment may not be required. Through proper planning, you can effectively reduce the overall wood pellet line price without compromising pellet quality or production efficiency.

What is a 10 T/H wood pellet production line price?

Generally speaking, our 10 ton/hour wood pellet line price ranges from $250,000 to $1,100,000. This price varies depending on factors such as feedstock type, degree of automation, and auxiliary equipment. It also varies depending on the customization services and installation requirements.
