Wood Chip Hammer Mill

wood chip hammer mill

The wood chip hammer mill is an indispensable equipment in modern wood processing and biomass energy industries. It is specifically designed to crush wood chips, sawdust, and shavings into uniform and fine particles, preparing for subsequent drying and pelletizing processes, and meeting the strict requirements for raw material particle size in wood pellet production, papermaking, and animal bedding, etc.

  • Output (depending on different raw materials): 0.5 – 50 T/H
  • Crush the material with size =<5cm into 0.5-20mm, the screen size can be customized

As the core equipment of the wood pellet production line, RICHI’s hammer mill for wood chips can efficiently convert wood chips into high-quality sawdust, providing ideal fuel wood powder for clean energy production. With advanced design, robust manufacturing process, and strict quality control, RICHI’s equipment has been exported to over 100 countries and has won wide trust from customers.

The operating principle of this equipment is simple and efficient, mainly relying on high-speed impact and screening control.

  • The wood chips enter the crushing chamber through the feed port. Inside the chamber, the rotor is equipped with multiple sets of hammer blades. Under the effect of high-speed rotation, it continuously exerts intense impact and friction on the materials, gradually breaking down the wood into smaller particles.
  • The crushed materials are pushed towards the screen installed at the bottom of the chamber. Only particles that meet the size requirements can smoothly pass through the sieve holes and be discharged, while larger particles will continue to be repeatedly impacted by the hammer blades in the chamber until they reach the set particle size standard.
  • By replacing screens with different hole diameters, the size of the finished particles can be flexibly adjusted, ranging from coarse wood chips to fine sawdust, meeting the needs of different production processes.

This continuous and efficient process ensures the uniformity of the particle size distribution and the stability of the output, making the wood chip hammer mill an indispensable key equipment in wood processing and biomass energy production lines.

The wood chip hammer mill is specially designed with a patented shaft-end ventilating system. This unique airflow design, combined with the optimized hammer arrangement, allows the machine to increase the output of small aperture materials by more than 25%.

In actual production, this means that even when processing high-moisture or hard-to-grind wood chips, the hammer mill can still achieve stable and efficient operation. Its widened grinding surface further enhances crushing efficiency, delivering outstanding results especially in fine and micro-grinding applications.

crush chamber

The hammer mill wood hammer mill adopts an advanced teardrop-shaped crushing chamber. This special structure not only reduces air resistance inside the chamber but also ensures uniform distribution of raw materials, making the crushing process smoother.

In addition, it incorporates a reasonable secondary crushing structure, which means materials are processed twice within the chamber, leading to finer particle sizes and better overall uniformity. Compared with traditional hammer mills, the output capacity is improved by around 25%, which is a significant advantage for large-scale wood pellet production lines.

One of the key features of the electric wood hammer mill is its high-precision dynamic balance rotor. Thanks to advanced balancing technology, the rotor runs smoothly, producing minimal vibration and low noise levels.

For operators, this means a more comfortable working environment, while for enterprises, it ensures consistent and reliable operation during long working hours. In industries where machines must run continuously, such stability is extremely valuable.

movable operating door

The wood chip hammer mill is designed with a movable operating door and a linkage sieve press structure. These user-friendly features make it easier to open the chamber, clean the inside, and replace sieve plates when necessary.

Routine maintenance, which is often a challenge in heavy-duty crushing equipment, becomes simple and time-saving. This not only reduces downtime but also lowers labor intensity, ensuring higher overall productivity.

The wood hammer mill machine supports both forward and reverse rotor operation, which effectively prolongs the service life of the hammer by utilizing both sides of the hammer head. This significantly reduces replacement frequency and maintenance costs.

In addition, the machine is equipped with a reliable safety interlocking device to ensure secure operation, preventing accidents and ensuring operator safety during use. With these protective measures, it is built for long-term, stable performance.

The machine is equipped with a new-type adjustable sieve pressure plate, as well as an adjustable back gauge and tuning technique. These advanced features make it possible to fine-tune the material circulation layer, ensuring that wood chips are thoroughly crushed into uniform particle sizes.

For customers who require precise control of finished product quality, such as in biomass fuel or wood pellet production, this flexibility provides a strong guarantee. It ensures that the final output meets strict industry standards while maximizing efficiency.

Application of Wood Chip Hammer Mill in Production Line

The wood hammer mill is a core component in various wood processing and biomass production lines. Its ability to efficiently reduce wood chips, shavings, and sawdust into uniform particles makes it highly versatile across different industries. Take a 4-5tph biomass pellet production line as an example. The entire process flow consists of raw material pre-treatment, crushing, drying, pelletizing, cooling, screening and packaging, etc. Among them, the crushing process directly determines the efficiency and quality of subsequent pellet production.

  • Raw Material Preparation – Logs, branches, and wood residues are initially sorted and debarked. Large pieces are cut into manageable sizes for further processing.
  • Crushing – The prepared wood chips are fed into the wood chip hammer mill. Here, high-speed hammers break down the material into fine and uniform particles suitable for pelletizing. This stage determines the final pellet quality, as consistent particle size ensures better pellet density, smooth extrusion, and reduced dust.
  • Drying – Crushed wood particles are dried to the required moisture content, typically 12–18%, to ensure efficient pellet formation and storage stability.
  • Pelletizing – The dried material enters the pellet mill, where it is compressed into cylindrical pellets under high pressure. Uniform particle size from the hammer mill ensures smooth pellet extrusion and prevents blockages.
  • Cooling – Newly formed pellets are hot and soft; cooling brings them to ambient temperature, hardening the surface and preventing deformation.
  • Screening and Packaging – Finished pellets are screened to remove fines or oversized particles, then packaged for storage or transport.

In this workflow, the wood hammer mill machine is indispensable. It not only reduces raw wood to the proper particle size but also ensures the consistency necessary for high-quality pellet production.

FAQ

Many customers want to know how to choose the right model, maintain it, and get the most out of their equipment. This FAQ section answers the most common questions, helping you understand how our dryer can improve pellet quality, reduce downtime, and make your production more efficient. And if you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to contact us anytime!

What kind of raw materials can this machine process?

Our machine is highly flexible in design and can handle almost all common wood-based biomass materials, including wood chips, sawdust, shavings, branches, offcuts, and even some hardwoods and forestry waste.

For materials with a higher moisture content (such as oil palm by-products, some broad-leaved woods), as long as an appropriate drying process is combined, they can also be crushed smoothly.

Compared to some low-end shredders on the market, our equipment is more efficient and stable when processing hard woods and high-fiber materials, avoiding blockages and reduced production capacity, thereby reducing operational risks for customers.

Why use a wood chip hammer mill in the pellet production line?

The core requirement of the granulation production line is that the raw material particle size must be uniform and meet the requirements of the granulator’s mold holes. If raw materials that have not been crushed are directly used, it is very likely to cause blockage in the granulator, damage to the mold, or poor pellet formation.

The equipment can efficiently crush large-sized raw materials into the appropriate particle size (the finished product size can be within the range of 0.5mm – 20mm), ensuring the smooth operation of subsequent granulation.

From the perspective of the entire production line, although the crushing process is only at the front end, it directly determines the stability of the production line and the yield of the granular products. It can be said to be a “key equipment with small investment and significant effect”.

How do I choose the right model?

RICHI offers a range of models from 0.5 to 50 t/h, suitable for different raw materials and scale requirements of customers. When choosing the equipment, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate based on the types of raw materials, moisture content, product requirements, and the overall line configuration.

Our engineering team will provide the most suitable solution according to the actual situation of the customers, avoiding problems of oversized or insufficient size, and truly achieving a match between investment and output.

Besides the hammer mill, what other equipment is needed for a complete pellet line? Can you provide the full solution?

Yes. In addition to the wood chip hammer mill, we can also offer a complete particle production line solution, including chippers, dryers, granulators, coolers, screens, packagers, etc., and we support customized configurations.

Different customers have different requirements: some focus on production capacity, some on the degree of automation, and some pay more attention to the stability of the quality of the finished pellets.
